Piccolo vs. Flute what's easier?

So I am an 18 year old and while I know I'm considered 'old' to start playing an instrument I really want to learn! I have always had a fascination with the wind instruments particularly the piccolo. Now I've done a little bit of research and a lot of sites and people recommend learning the flute before learning the piccolo and I was wondering if it's really easier or if it wouldn't be much difference learning the piccolo without taking up flute first? Also if I do decide on piccolo can I lean from a flute instructor or must I get one with piccolo experience? (I don't know how common piccolo instructors are). Thanks so much :)
