Why is Dragonball so different from Dragonball Z?

DBZ is diffrent then DB because what they wanted to do is make it shorter. I know this because I went to C2E2 and funimation had a panale about there shows and they said they wanted some thing new but something that fans will still want to see. Hope this help~sorry for typos.
